No 72 Sqn Centenary Celebrations Information - 30 JUNE - 3JUL 2017

A quick update from Chris Nash regarding the Centenary Dinner and Hangar Dance dress codes - The Centenary Guest Dinner will be Mess Dress or Black Tie (with miniatures) with the equivalent for ladies which I believe is cocktail dress, although it's not worth getting to hung up on. I believe the important thing is to have shoulders covered. The hangar party is either 1940s fancy dress or black tie, with the idea being that it is less formal than the guest night.

Below is laid out the latest information we have on the planned Centenary celebrations. Please be aware that all of it is subject to change and amendment. Keep an eye on the Assoc website at:

and the Facebook page:

for updates.

As we approach The New Year all is under way for The Centenary Celebrations. Save for the finer details all the essential planning has taken place.

As you may already know it was decided at the last A.G.M. at North Weald that in view of the cost and extent of the Centenary Weekend at Linton from the 30th June 2017 to 3rd July 2017 there would not be a re-union at North Weald in 2017.

With this in mind I hope that as many Association members are able to attend this special celebration and include family and friends.

Firstly the weekend celebrations will start at Linton following a similar format as before with Friday 30th June from early afternoon with a flying display. There is no specific limit on numbers attending this save that details will need to be given in advance to the Squadron. The information required is annexed to this letter. The evening will consist of a Dining In Night. There is a limit on numbers with quite a few guests to be catered for so it is important to get your booking in early if you intend to come. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE ASSOCIATION MEMBERS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED THIS EVENING ON A REGULAR BASIS. Payment for this will be direct to the Squadron. Please refer to the booking form included in this information. In the event of over-subscription a “reserve” list will operate. There will be a cost for attending the Dining In and possibly for the afternoon display where food /B.B.Q may be available.

The Association will hold its AGM on Saturday morning 1st July in a room allocated in the Officers Mess (hangovers optional).

Saturday evening is the Centenary Dinner and Dance in the hangar at Linton on Ouse. Tickets will cost £50 and will be on sale from 1st January 2017. Squadron and Linton Station members will be able to purchase tickets direct from the Squadron. The event is open to Association members, family and friends. The price will include a meal (menu to be finalised - probably a three course meal) with wine. It will be a 1940’s themed dance with Echo 42, an 18 piece big band setting the tone. The event will commence at 1800 and finish at midnight. To order your ticket(s) please refer to the booking form included. Please book as early as possible to assist in budgeting and catering. Tickets will be purchased through me and cheques should be made payable to “72 Squadron Association”. Please do not send direct to our Treasurer because your ticket(s) may not get allocated in time. Also ENCLOSE A STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE to enable confirmation and tickets to be dispatched to you.

Sunday 2nd July is the York Minster Service, Parade and Flypast. The Minster has agreed to dedicate the Sunday Evensong to 72 Squadron and all Squadron and Association members and family are invited to attend. It is hoped that a parade will be possible. The Service commences at 1600 with the proposed parade suggesting meeting at 1500. This would represent the closing event of the Centenary weekend and would be exactly 100 years after the Squadron was formed.

During the weekend there will be opportunities to purchase memorabilia including Squadron prints. In particular raffle tickets can be purchased to win an original oil painting by Ken Summers.

The Station has been asked to assist in accommodation because local accommodation is limited and probably already taken. Please make sure that you complete the form annexed to this newsletter if needed.

Any amendments to costs, menus, accommodation info etc will be posted on the Association website/Facebook. Should you have any questions or concerns then please do not hesitate to contact me.

During the course of 2017 the Squadron has a number of Centenary events planned:

It is hoped that a Tucano will be painted in 72 Sqn BoB camouflage for use at all of the 2017 static displays.

Centenary Memorabilia will be available via the Squadron and possibly the Association.

Members of the Squadron and Association to visit Sicily (possibly April 2017).

The Association is looking into commissioning a Centenary D.V.D.

Squadron and commemorative photos utilising the BoB Tucano.

Squadron Historical Display boards.

Squadron visit to Aldergrove and 72 Sqn (ATC)

A grand flypast- Tuesday 27 June 2017 to include a flypast for each remaining BoB veteran.

Squadron Charity AT Challenge possibly in June 2017 likely to be based around the Three Peaks Challenge.

The Association has been able to secure £3,000 of sponsorship from Thales. Other potential sponsors are being approached.

The Squadron is keen to be involved in the Channel Dash commemorations provisionally arranged for February 2017.

I hope that you approve what is hoped to be a spectacular year both for the Squadron and the Association.
