About Me
Joined service in 1963 as Boy Entrant in 49th entry at Cosford. Trained as AWM. Left Cosford in Dec. 1964. Posted to Odiham in ARSF. Lasted about a month there then joined 72 Sqdn. Had first flight in the Wessex in the Jan of '65. Jock Tarwid was the pilot, Taff Chadwick was the crewman. Frightened all sorts out of me. Started a love affair with the Wessex that never faded. Did a year in Sharjah in 1967 then back to 72. Went on Fitters course in '69 then back to 72. Off to 103 Sqdn in Tengah in 1972. Back onto 41 SqdnPhantoms in '75. Didn't like them at all, noisy smelly things whose wings didn't go round. Finally when 41 folded did short stint on BBMF then out into the IT industry. Exciting wasn't it. Kip Spurgeon was my entry - 31st - I think he finished his time as SAC
Hi JB,
It is I - the shortish, gingerish beglassed person! I was seconded to the Zambian Air Force in 1968 as part of the British Joint Services Training Team - we did not have Britannias but Beavers, Caribous, Dakotas, Pembrokes and HS 748 (Andover)an interesting posting but not too much of the training. I returned to Africa in 1979 as part of the Commonwealth Monitoring Team in Rhodesia on Pumas and in 1983 was with Airwork in Zimbabwe.
Hi JB - fellow AWM & ex B/E (31st)!
I was on 72 1967/68 & 69/70. Postings took me to Wyton, Seletar, Gan, Thorney Island, Binbrook, Leuchars, Odiham, Zambia, Germany, Waddington, Oman and Marham. Left in 1982, then 4 years in Zimbabwe, 10 in Saudi, 2 in Abu Dhabi and 4 in Valley. Joined Compassion in World Farming 2003 and retired 2009. Loved the Wessex - hated the Puma!
Hi JB. Welcome to the website. Are you thinking of joining the 72 Sqn Association? If so you can use the forms on the website and send them to me for processing.
