I am researching the names on the Nelson Thomlinson School,(Wigton,Cumbria) one of whom was Fl Sg Tom Watson of 72 Sqd who was killed in action on 4/4/42. I have found details of him in Swift to Battle but do not know as to when he joined the RAF or 72 Sqdr. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I served as a Sqn clerk in the early 70s. John Price was the Squadron CO, then a Wing commander, and went on to be an AVM. Joe French, now Sir Joe, was a Fg Off and went on to become Air Chf Mshl, and John Day, now Sir John, was then a Flt Lt, and also went on to become an Air Chf Mshl. Some interesting times and particularly with the NI run in those days. I think Roger Merry was a FS ALM in those days.

The aircraft was making a GCA approach when ,with out warning, it dived into the ground. The reason for the loss of control was not determined.

I served for a time as a Radar JT with 72 at Leconfield mainly on nightshift. and enjoyed working with Michael Cook ( Nickname Gunk ) and Bob Berridge my fellow radar experts! That was way back in 1959/60. Cheers, 247 Jock.

Can you provide a little more information about you father? Do you know his rank, trade and where/when he served with 72? It will help narrow down the search for information.
